CO2 Calculator, a CSR Program by Air France-KLM Group

"As part of Air France's policy of transparent communication with all stakeholders and customers, it has implemented a new calculation tool to help customers calculate the CO2 emissions generated by their trips or by the carriage of their freight to all the destinations served by the fleet of Air France, KLM and their regional partners. This calculated figure reflects the actual performance of Air France's operations to each destination. To calculate the quantity of fuel burned, and hence the amount of CO2 attributable to each passenger, the proportion required to carry passengers and that needed to transport freight is first calculated, and prorated according to the different weights. CO2 emmissiona are directly proportional to the amount of fuel burned and therefore easily calculated. Air France then offers customers the choice of offsetting the quantity of CO2 produced during their trips. They are invited to log on to the joint Air France/GoodPlanet Web site, an association in partnership with Air France for the offset program. This Web site provides information on the compensation program and the projects funded by the program, as well as enables customers to donate."
