Coal Ash Reuse, a CSR Program by American Electric Power
AEP burns an estimated 76 million tons of coal per year, generating significant quantities of byproducts that require disposal or recycling. In 2006 (most recent available data), AEP produced nearly 8.4 million tons of coal ash products; more than 40 percent was reused in projects that included structural fill, road beds, acid mine drainage neutralization and in wallboard production. In 2006, this effort resulted in approximately $18.6 million in avoided costs for landfills.
